Today has been my favourite day in Bulgaria so far.
On arriving at my guesthouse in the middle of the Rhodope mountains, I asked where I should hike to this afternoon. In response, I was handed a pair of car keys. The wonderful guesthouse owners, who have already been kind enough to offer me their washing machine, who have a four month puppy called Charlie, who I have been communicating with solely through Google Translate, insisted I used their car for a little roadtrip – how lovely! So I spent the afternoon roadtripping in an ancient mint green Fiat Panda which I am pretty sure is older than me.
(Always, always stop for a tortoise in need. I popped this little guy onto the verge.)
The Rhodope mountains are brimming with Thracian ruins and this was one of their megalithic religious complexes.
I also passed by this cool rock formation, which is attributed to volcanic activity from millions of years ago.
The final stop on the roadtrip was over a dam (which I’ve found to be quite common in the Balkans?)
Finally, one large stick of Turkish delight which cost me 67p(!)
